Paddington station taxi guide
Paddington taxi rank: passenger guide
Paddington’s main black-taxi rank is on the first-floor taxi deck above platform 12. It is not on the main concourse at street level, so the most useful landmark is platform 12 and the lifts beside it.
Network Rail says the deck is reached by road from Bishop’s Bridge Road. TfL also lists the Paddington station rank on Bishop’s Bridge Road. Passengers inside the station should use the signed lifts rather than trying to walk around the outside of the building.

Step by step
How to find the rank
- 1
On the main concourse, locate platform 12 at the western side of the station.
- 2
Use the lifts beside platform 12 and select the taxi-rank level. The rank is above the platform, not outside the Praed Street entrance.
- 3
Join the passenger queue on the taxi deck. Staff can help manage boarding at busy times.
- 4
If arriving on the Elizabeth line or Underground, follow signs to the National Rail concourse first, then look for platform 12 and taxi signs.
Step-free planning
Accessibility and assistance
Network Rail says the taxi deck is fully covered and that taxis with both side and rear wheelchair ramps can use it.
The step-free passenger route uses the lifts beside platform 12. If you need assistance from a train, book Passenger Assist with the operator or ask station staff to help you reach the lift and rank.

Rail, Tube and local connections
- National Rail services include Great Western Railway and the Heathrow Express.
- Paddington has Elizabeth line, Bakerloo, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City line connections, but the routes between platforms are not all in the same part of the complex.
- For an airport journey, confirm the terminal before departure. Heathrow is large and a terminal mistake can add time and cost.

Practical passenger tips
- The taxi deck is easier to find from platform 12 than from a street name. Use the platform landmark when asking staff.
- At busy arrival times, remain in the managed queue rather than walking down the vehicle ramp.
- If someone is meeting you by car or private hire, use their agreed pickup location. The taxi deck is for the station’s licensed black-taxi operation.

Popular destinations from Paddington
These are orientation ideas, not fixed-fare quotes. London taxi fares are metered and journey time depends on traffic, restrictions and the exact destination.
Heathrow Airport
Confirm the terminal and check whether rail or taxi best suits your group, luggage and accessibility needs.
Hyde Park and Bayswater
Give a precise gate, hotel or street because the park and surrounding neighbourhood cover a wide area.
Marylebone and the West End
Traffic conditions can vary sharply, especially around Oxford Street and major events.
Hospitals nearby
For St Mary’s or another hospital, name the department or entrance if you have it.
Black taxi or minicab?
A licensed London taxi can wait at an appointed rank and accept a passenger without a booking. A minicab or app-based private-hire vehicle must be booked through a licensed operator before the journey. Do not accept an unsolicited ride from someone approaching you inside or outside the station.
Taxi availability is not live. A valid rank can be empty for a period, particularly late at night or during disruption.
